On the previous Saturday, three couples visited the restaurant to celebrate a birthday. After their meal, the waitress provided what she thought were mouth fresheners, but were actually dry ice granules. Consequently, the patrons experienced burns on their tongues and palates, as confirmed by both the police and the restaurant. Out of the six individuals, five were injured upon ingesting the granules.
According to police reports on Monday, three individuals were admitted to Aarvy Hospital in the city, while two others were discharged. As per the complaint filed, the couples – Ankit Kumar and Neha, Manika Goenka and Pritika Rastogi, and Deepak Arora and Himani – visited La Foresta Cafe on March 2 to celebrate Manika’s birthday.
Ankit, who filed the complaint, described the incident, stating, “As we were about to leave after dinner, the waitress presented transparent granules in a bowl, claiming they were mouth fresheners. I refrained from taking one as I was tending to my 1-year-old child.” Ankit further explained that upon ingestion, the others immediately felt a burning sensation.
“They tried to spit it out and rinse their mouths with water. However, they began vomiting and bleeding, enduring intense pain while seeking help. Despite my attempts to summon the restaurant staff, no assistance was provided,” Ankit conveyed. He alleged that it took 40 minutes for authorities to arrive at the eatery, following which the group was taken to a hospital. A video capturing the incident shows a woman spitting out blood while holding a sizable piece of ice, with three others seen gesturing as they try to alleviate the burning sensation.
Ankit mentioned that he collected some granules and showed them to a doctor who confirmed they were dry ice. Preliminary investigations by the police suggest that the waitress “misinterpreted” the dry ice as mouth freshener.
